I installed a fresh Joomla 1.5.1 with German as default language. I turned on the legacy Mode for Jomla1.0x compatibility.
After installing JEvent 1.4.3Rc all messages in fron at backend are still in english. How do i turn on German frontend ?

checklocale task returns:

Simple locale testing routines
Your current system locale is : de_DE.UTF-8
Joomla has set your locale as :
try out a locale string

Today's day name in this locale (de_DE) is : Sonntag
Typical unix locale values are tried out below
Sunday in Finnish (using fi_FI) is sunnuntai,
Sunday in French (using fr_FR) is dimanche
Sunday in German (using de_DE) is Sonntag.
cy_GB Sunday in Welsh (using cy_GB) is Sul.

What can I do ?

Could be that the language file name is is incompatible with the locale as specified by Joomla 1.5.

Try adding the following
echo  "language file = ".$pathLang . mosMainFrame::getCfg('lang') . '.php<br/>';

at line 59 in components/com_events/libraries/helper.php and report back

The line returns:
language file = /home/evkvollma/public_html/voma151/components/com_events/language/German.php

As you see German.php starts uppercase, but the language file in the language directory starts with lowercase as german.php.

Solved:

I changed the following line

    <backwardLang>German</backwardLang>
to
<backwardLang>german</backwardLang>

in language/de-DE/de-DE.xml (Note two files ! one for frontend and one for backend)

BTW: The basic Joomla which has this wrong language file is 'de-DE.joomla151-stable-full.zip', dated 8.Feb.08.
(just for the records, or if someone stumps over the same error).

I put a bug report at the Joomla german translation project. They fixed it in the repository. The fix is available with the next translation release.
